Reselling or Consigning Your Unwanted Items Online and in Chicagoland Area Stores
It is always worth the effort to try and sell items that you no longer need that have life left in them. However, it is not easy to find the right resale or consignment store interested to sell your unwanted items because most places want specific things. It is essential to know what you have to sell or consign. For example, you need to know the age of your clothes. Certain items require an appraisal or authentication documentation.
It is essential to realize that your unwanted belongings are ultimately worth what someone is willing to pay. Generally, once an item can no longer get returned to the store at full price, it is usually worth half to a third of what it cost even in like-new condition. Do not become upset or insulted when a merchant gives you a low offer because that is business. You do not have to take their offer, try negotiating. Realize that they are taking your item on the chance that it will sell. A reseller does the work of advertising and featuring your articles in their store. The more resale or consignment shops you interview, the better. Call the stores first and go over their resale or consignment terms; everyone is different. Make sure to remember when the consignment ends and understand if they do markdowns during the duration of the agreement.
Weigh your selling options. You can try online resale websites, which are all different. Most have fees and require you to do all the work, such as post, ship, and engage in all buyer communication. Also, selling online would entail additional costs due to the use of an electronic commerce (e-commerce) company that facilitates payments between parties through online funds transfers.
There is also an option to utilize free online marketplaces that are, in a sense, a virtual garage sale. Facebook’s Marketplace is an example. In such selling platforms, you create the post and meet the potential buyer somewhere or invite them to your home for the sales transaction.

It is nice to deal locally with a brick-and-mortar resale or consignment shops because you can physically bring items into their stores and leave with the ones that cannot sell. Most resale and consignment shops will donate unsold items when your contract ends, but others will keep them when not picked up promptly and profit. Therefore, read your agreement carefully.
Online transactions are more work, but you usually make more money than utilizing a storefront, which generally is a 50/50 split. You also have control over the pricing. The downside is the work involved. Most online resale websites require you to post and maintain full engagement with potential buyers.
